Permaculture Principles
- Observe & Interact - Catch & Store Energy - Obtain a Yield - Apply self-regulation & accept feedback
- Use & value renewable resources and services - Produce no waste - Design from patterns to details -
- Integrate rather than segregate - Use small and slow solutions - Use & value diversity - Use edges & value the marginal
- Creatively use & respond to change

Meeting our basic human needs
What is Permaculture?
One definition among many.
Permaculture is a means of addressing our basic human needs in a way that works with, and learns from, nature.
The word Permaculture is a portmanteau (don't worry we'll talk about that in class, just think Brangelina) combining the words permanent (as in sustainable) and culture (including human and agri-culture). Permaculture is about creating sustainable environments and lifestyles, not only in terms of food production, but how we build, and how we work together as a society.

Water
The Water Cycle
Possible investigations for this unit. Choose your own learning adventure:
Measuring evaporation: Just how much water could possibly evaporate in a day anyway, and what difference do the conditions make?
Measuring transpiration: How much water do plants transpire in a day? Do we need to replace the same amount?
Measuring precipitation: How could I build weather station to track our daily rainfall? Does terrain really make a difference to rainfall?
Measuring water use: How much water do we use in a typical home each day?
Designing water reduction and capture techniques: How could we reduce our water use at home? How can we capture our water for use by our plants?

Soil
Soil Investigations:
Soil Type - Horizon Profiling: What kind of soil do I have?
Soil Type - Water retention: How well does my soil retain moisture?
Soil Life: What's alive in my soil? Collect soil samples from different parts of the school ground and study them for types of life. What observations can you make? Which soil is the most 'alive'?

Or, try this for a little 'game' based learning all about soil life.
