Maths in Nature, Art & Design

Mathematics is so much more than just numbers - it is the language of Science, it is a tool to help us understand our world, it is the pattern of nature, it is the foundation of beautiful art, it is ingenious engineering.

This page is a place to help us celebrate that. From pattern to geometry, let's look at some of the ways maths and creativity overlap.

Geometric Art Designs

When exploring the connection between mathematics and art, one of the best places to start can be with a study of geometry, symmetry and tessellation.

Below you'll find a selection of artworks all inspired by geometry and strong mathematical shapes.

What shapes can you see? Which can you name?
How do you think those shapes have been created?
What do you notice about the colours the artists have chosen to complement their designs? Why do you think they have made those choices?

Browse through the artworks below for inspiration, then if you're feeling brave, why not try to create one of your own. I'd love to see what you come up with.

If you're keen to start experimenting with geometric designs but aren't sure where to start, this next bit's for you.
The photograph below shows some geometric art designed by students in a Grade 5 class. It comes from a website called Art Lessons for Kids. The website is written for teachers, but if you'd like to learn how to create a design like this yourself, you may like to give it a try. Click the pic to follow the link.

Studying the Artists - Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian is a great example of a world-famous artist who used geometry in his craft. He is particularly known for using bold lines and colour to create vibrant, eye-catching designs. This video shares a little of his story.

So, feeling inspired? Or, is this one of those times where you look at an artwork and think 'I could do that'? Prove it. Here are a couple of examples of Mondrian-inspired artworks created by other kids.  Share your creations with us and we'll add them below so others can enjoy your art too.
