Spelling and Vocabulary Building - at Home
I luv speeling!
If you' like to keep building your spelling and vocabulary skills whilst you're learning from home, this page is just for you. However, please remember, the activities on this page are optional. Please talk it through with your loved ones before starting. You will need around 20 minutes of support during the week to complete these tasks.
Here's how to start:
1. Ask a family member to read this week's word list to you. You'll find the list in the first two sections of the table below. The first 25 words are high-frequency revision words. The next 25 words are phonemic focus words. Please leave the Word Studies list for now (see Step 6).
2. Write each word in your book as your family member reads it. Spell each word as accurately as you can.
3. Mark your attempts by checking them against the list on this page.
4. Create your personal list for the week by finding your first 10-15 errors and copying the correct spelling into a new practice list.
5. Add any other words that you think may be useful to practise for the week. These might include new words you've discovered in books you are reading, or words that challenged you while you were writing. Try to keep your list to no more than 20 words in total.
6. If you're looking for an extra challenge, or made few errors in the initial list, browse the Word Studies box for a selection of themed extension words based around word families and common spelling patterns. Copy those that interest you to your personal list.
7. Throughout the week, complete at least one activity from each of the activity pages on this page to help you practise the correct spelling and usage of your words. You may like to try one of the games with your family too.
8. At the end of the week, ask a family member to read your personal list to you while you spell each word in your book. Mark your own attempts. How did you do? How many new words were you able to add to your spelling / writing vocabulary this week?

When you've finished, use the list to identify any errors you've made and add the first 10-15 of those words to your own personal spelling list for the week. Add in a few words from your reading or writing you'd like to practise, and you're ready to go.
So, let's have some fun learning the words you've identified. Try the practice activities below.

Practice Activities
When building your spelling vocabulary it is useful to focus on two different types of practice. One targets the actual spelling of the word, the other focuses on how to use the word in context.
Over the course of the week, try to complete at least one activity from the Word Properties and Memorisation document, and one from the Word Meaning and Usage.
