What is I Respect?
I Respect is an acronym that tries to capture the values that we hold dear in our school community.
As we study them this year, we're going to think more closely about what these values look like in action. How can we model them? How can we show that we, as individuals, as a class, and as a community, are 'good people'?
Some students were asked these same questions in the past, and these were some of the answers they gave. They have been written as action statements. As you consider each value, think closely about how you would model it. Try to express the idea in your own words or action statement. Can you come up with a better way of showing what each of these qualities looks like?
Create a list that reflects who you want to be, this year and beyond.

Integrity
|
I stand up for what is right.
I am honest, I tell the truth and I keep my word. I do what is right even when no one else is looking. |
Responsibility
|
I come to school ready to learn, and apply my best effort.
I take care and ownership over my actions and belongings. I turn my mistakes into growth by acknowledging them, accepting feedback and changing for the future. |
Empathy
|
I try to understand others' feelings.
I care for others and help them when they need it. I think about how my actions will affect others before I act. |
Sustainability
|
I think of how my actions affect the planet and choose those that cause least harm or create positive outcomes.
I refuse, reduce, re-use, repair, recycle and re-think the materials that I use. I begin by acting locally and thinking globally; switching off lights, reducing water use in my home, and composting (etc) |
Peace
|
I speak and act kindly and respectfully.
I listen carefully to others and try to understand their feelings and opinions. I use kindness to solve problems. |
Equality
|
I value the differences in people.
I think of others' needs when thinking of my own. When I have more than I need, I support those who have less than they need. |
Community
|
I learn from, and value, the people around me.
I contribute positively to my networks, spreading good. |
Trust
|
I speak the truth, in kindness.
I am true to my word. I respect others' privacy. |
